Phenological Stages of Three Varieties of Rice (Oryza sativa), in Relation to Temperature and Solar Radiation in Guanacaste, Costa Rica


This investigation was conducted in Guanacaste, Costa Rica and consisted in the evaluation of the phenological stages of the three commercial varieties of rice as related to daily temperature and sun radiation data, which were registered at the meteorological station at Hacienda Mojica. The three varieties were very similar in the development time of the phenological stages as well as in the relation to the accumulated degree day (ADD) and to the solar radiation accumulated (SRA). With the established relationships, it is possible to determine the phenological stage of the plant using the ADD and the SRA, or quantity of ADD and SRA required to reach a specific phenological stage. These relationships can be important tools for the agronomic management of this crop.
