Efficiency of a Solar Distillation Apparatus for the Production of Bioethanol


Bioenergy sources obtained from the use of agricultural residues are a source of clean, renewable energy. This project evaluated the efficiency of a solar distiller for the production of alcohol from the fermentation of bananas as an alternative to fossil fuels. Three repetitions of 1 kg of banana each was fermented during 15 days at an average room temperature of 25 °C. Subsequently, a simple distillation was conducted with 200 mL of ferment from each repetition at a temperature between 75 °C and 80 °C. A solar distillation also was carried out in order to compare the efficiency between both systems. The average alcohol percentage yield in the solar distillation was relatively low (0.75 %) and statistically different (p<0.05) from the yield from the simple distillation (4.83 %).
