Diagnostic of the Situation of Ordinary Solid Waste Management in the Community of San Bartolo, Tuxtepec, Oaxaca, México

An expression of environmental pollution is the regular solid wastes that have been added to the daily environment. In rural communities have a waste composition, quantity and dynamics different from the waste generated in urban and industrial areas. Therefore the established technologies for urbanized areas are not feasible for implementation in small communities. To adapt techniques and approaches that are aligned with the reality that we live in a rural community, such as San Bartolo, the present work was carried out. The community of San Bartolo belongs to the municipality of San Juan Bautista Tuxtepec. It has an area of 1640 ha, which are plain and lomeríos, with the plains that dominate the landscape. It is located at kilometer 7 on the road-Tuxtepec Loma Bonita in the northeast of Oaxaca. For the characterization of wastes that are generated internally, using the protocol SWAP (Solid Waste Analysis Protocol). To evaluate the type of waste generated at source was used visual classification. In place of disposal procedure was used to classify and sorrow. The results were as follows; organic material occupied the largest share, with 41 %. We continue to health care waste with 16 % and 7 % with debris. The plastic as a whole was another type of waste with one of the largest percentages, 13 %. Of which the plastic bottle had the greatest proportion. As part of the diagnosis were worked focus groups to ascertain the level of awareness of people on the issue of waste management. One of the conclusions of this activity showed that people do not recognize it as a problem in itself, but the side effects. Also as a result of this activity was identified change in the pattern of income as a cause of the increase in per capita waste generation and that the community itself acknowledges. To propose a work plan to initiate a process of awareness of the topic was conducted a survey. With the results are analyzed the level of availability of people to train and learn about the proper handling of garbage. Finally, as part of this diagnosis is a management plan to initiate a series of activities leading to the formation of a Model Integrated Waste Management.
